Do More Buttons Make A Better Game?

Ahh, remember the good old days? Two buttons is all you ever needed to worry about in order to play a fun video game. If you wanted to get all crazy there was the famous Konami code that required using all the buttons and the control pad. Well things have certainly changed over the years,

behold:

This is the Holy Grail of Nerdness. This behemouth has 40 buttons, 2 joysticks, a throttle control and uses 3 pedals. What on earth could this be good for? Xbox has one title that requires this beast, (although I must say it is only slightly larger than the original Xbox controller) that game being Steel Battalion. This is an all out Mech simulator and it is one hell of a ride. I am very slow to go on about this game since it came out in 2002, but still look at this controller!
This is what you see when you play. Your view is as if you were in the cockpit of this massive walking tank. This is where all the buttons come into play. Everything can be controlled from camera views, to windshield wipers, fire extinguishers, counter-measures, and the dreaded ejection seat button. This thing is very real, if you die game over and all your progress is lost. If you don't eject, you get to start the whole game over from the beginning. This game is not for the casual gamer or people who love Mech Assault. The movements are what you would expect from something 80 feet tall to be. The action is wild and intense, but these guys don't run at breakneck speeds. The $200 price tag will make you choke a bit too. If you haven't heard of this game it is because it was only released in a limited amount due to the price of making the controller. I believe it was pretty much a special order affair only. I love it, don't play it nearly enough. When I do play though, I get a bit of a workout hauling the controller out of the closet to get set up. I hope the someday there will be a sequel to this title so that all of us who own this can find more use for the controller.
